Mário J. Alves has a degree in Civil Engineering from Lisbon Technical University (IST, 1988) and a Master of Science in Transport from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (ICSTM, 1992). He worked as a Research Fellow at the Centre for Transport Studies of the University of London and the Centre for Urban and Regional Systems of the University of Lisbon. His academic research focused on modeling and analysis of activity based routines and travel patterns, comparing international travel diaries, stated preference choice experiments and survey methods for collecting travel diaries. As a transport and mobility management consultant he was the Executive Coordinator of the Mobility Plan of Almada and participated in several European projects like MEST, TEST, LifeCycle and ActiveAcess. Recently he worked on a report for the Ministry of the Environment, to critically assess the policies of the Portuguese government to achieve the Kyoto targets. He also worked as an advisor for several European institutions like the Aberdeen County Council and Castilla y Léon Regional Energy Agency. He was part of the International Scientific Programme Committee of the conference Walk21 in Toronto and currently he is National Coordinator of the COST Action Pedestrian Quality Needs. He is expert advisor for the European Commission Directorate-General for Energy and Transport. In 2008 he was invited by the L'EPFL, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne to be part of the panel of experts (Spacewatch) to advise and recommend the Swiss authorities on issues related to mobility and urban planning. Over the last decade, Mario wrote articles and presented numerous papers and seminars in several European countries on topics related to transport and sustainable mobility.
