The SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION Initiative was launched by Tirone Nunes in November 2007 with the publication “SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION in the Mediterranean Climate Region” (in Portuguese) and the web site www.ConstrucaoSustentavel.pt. In 2008, establishing a Public Private Partnership with AGÊNCIA PORTUGUESA DO AMBIENTE (the National Environment Agency) and AGÊNCIA PARA A ENERGIA (the National Energy Agency), the Initiative started a series of extremely successful Workshops and Seminars targeted at the end user and at all the relevant actors of the construction sector.

In 2009, the Initiative involved more than 20 Sustainable Construction Solution Supplier Companies from the private sector, to become sponsors, as the solutions they provide are critical for the improvement of the energy environmental performance of buildings.

Also in 2009, the first open on-line platform for Energy Certification and improvement measures for the built environment was established, in partnership with the National Energy Agency.

In 2010, the SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION Initiative widened its scope again, by entering into partnership with two new institutions: The OCEANÁRIO DE LISBOA (the most visited live Museum on the Oceans) and Parque Expo (the country's operational vehicle for the implementation of its public environmental, land management and regional development policies), while also including the Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente (National Environment Agency, already a partner of the SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION Initiative). With these three partners, the SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION Initiative is launching the HUMAN HABITAT 2010 Lecture Series in order to address the very relevant subject of sustainable cities.

All communication platforms, promoted and coordinated by the SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION Initiative, are open and free of charge for the general public. Following Tirone Nunes radical transparency policy established since the mid 1990’s, these on-line platforms make available all the important information to all decision makers in the construction sector, with the aim of mainstreaming sustainable construction and sustainable urban development.

The mission of the SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION Initiative is to contribute to the prosperity of our society, using natural resources efficiently and being effective in the transformation of renewable resources, during the entire life cycle of buildings.

The SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION Initiative is a Tirone Nunes brand, down streaming information, raising awareness and training decision makers in the construction sector, on the basis of the technical and business experience acquired over a period of 20 years of putting sustainable construction into practice in Portugal.
